Career Snapshot

Mr. Jaligama has a background in Civil and Environmental engineering with specific experience in watershed management and modeling, TMDLs, hydrologic/hydrodynamic and water quality modeling, ground water modeling and spatial analysis with Geographic Information Systems. His experience includes development, calibration and validation of the water quality and hydrologic models for different rivers. He has worked on the Non-Tidal Passaic River Nutrient TMDL Study and the Raritan River Basin Nutrient TMDL Study. Water quality modeling for the TMDLs was performed using Water Quality Simulation Program (WASP). As a part of the TMDL studies, Mr. Jaligama has developed a new hydrologic model, HydroWAMIT, to simulate the overland runoff flows and loads generated from the watersheds. He has also worked on various water quality modeling projects for wasteload allocation studies, regional storm water management and planning projects and dilution studies for mixing zones.

His master's thesis involved the development of two dimensional (width averaged) coupled hydrodynamic/water quality model (DOMod) for estuaries. The model simulates the impact of the nutrients discharged from various point and nonpoint sources in the instream dissolved oxygen concentrations. During his masters, Mr. Jaligama has also worked for Malcolm Pirnie and Limno-Tech as a consultant for water quality studies along with Dr. Joseph Atkinson, a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the State University of New York, Buffalo. The work with the above-mentioned firms involved the application of DOMod model to the Black River, Ohio and the Buffalo River, NY, respectively.
