Laboratory and Field Services

Given the quantity and variety of water quality studies that Omni conducts, it is imperative that we understand not only the planning and evaluation phases of the process but also the collection and analysis of the information that will be evaluated. The laboratory and field services offered by Omni supplement our capabilities in performing water quality studies and better enable us to deliver sound analyses based on accurate results and proper procedures.

Omni staff members have decades of experience in collecting samples from streams, treatment plant effluent, lakes and ponds, stormwater runoff, and biological habitats in or near water bodies. These samples have been collected under conditions of high flow and low flow, as well as during rain events. In addition to collecting samples for analysis, Omni also has the equipment, experience, and capability to measure the physical characteristics of the water bodies being studied. This includes measuring flow across a stream, taking stream cross sections, measuring the depth of light penetration in lakes and streams, and performing lake bathymetry.

Many of our studies have required the use of specialized procedures or equipment. During dilution studies, for example, dye is injected into the water body and the sample concentrations are measured at various intervals. For studies measuring trace amounts of pollutants at very low levels, we have employed procedures to ensure that no sample contamination occurs. Other studies call for continuous monitoring of certain parameters for days or weeks at a time using complex equipment. Omni is quite adept at meeting all of these requirements, and has done so successfully many times.

Omni maintains and runs a New Jersey certified laboratory for a small subset of water quality parameters, allowing us to collect measurements for the following parameters: pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, salinity, and chlorinein-situ. Omni owns and maintains all the necessary equipment for sampling these parameters. Omni is well versed in the techniques necessary to collect samples for a wide range of pollutants, and we frequently collaborate with many certified outside laboratories for additional analyses when necessary.
